Can I tell if someone has been picking my door locks?

by D
(Michigan )

I have held in my home for my disabled husband. Because I run errands sometimes and have had untrustworthy helpers in the past, I have put key locks on several doors. They are schlage brand exterior door locks. Recently I have had trouble getting my keys in these locks. Is it likely they have been picked?

Tell tail signs if lock has been picked NEW
by: Tinman

Hi,
Maybe this will help, grab a magnifier and a flashlight.

Eric

Signs of Bumping
-Fresh nicks around the edges of the keyhole from pounding the key a little too forcefully
-Shiny metal edges that look like they’ve been recently hit.

Signs of Picking
-Tiny scratch marks, showing fresh, shiny metal around the key hole (finer than from a key).

Signs of Brute Force
– Paint circles from lock fixture movement (like it was loosened and retightened out of place)
– Bent deadbolts or latches
– Warped doors/doorframes.

Do you also have a dead bolt on the door. An attached garage with an enterence to the house? Wafer locks a child can open. Do you check the windows are locked.

There are other ways to get into a house. If you do not have a dead bolt. Check for scratches on the inside of the door frame. I apologize for all the questions, just trying to help.

Yes, there is a way to tell but it depends also on the lock type. Example, if it has brass pins which are very soft. The only way to really hide it, if is they used brass picks. The age of the lock plays a part. No insults intended, do you know how to dismantle a lock? If so, I would be happy to help you. First I need to know the lock type in question.

Or send it to me, I would be happy to do this for nothing. But in the interim, I suggest what others have stated, replace the lock. Get something difficult to pick that has at least security spools and a side bar. They can still be picked by some members of this forum. But not by the average person.

You also have the option (still replace the lock) of a wireless security camera that are not expensive. If the location has a internet connection. I can provide you with instructions to do this cheaper. I also have a degree in computer science. And have freeware software, I have done this before for other reasons and people. You also have other options not expensive. Buy a set of UV marker's with a UV light. You can get the set under 10.00 on Amazon. Mark the keyhole, sides ect. before you leave at night. Next day use the UV light. You will see if anything was touched or disturb. But again, replace the lock.

I will monitor this for a week or two. If you need more extreme measures, I can help but only advice and options.

Yes NEW
by: steve

Yes sudden key misfunction is a definate sign an amateur has tried to perform a non destructive bypass but having no skill or virtue has damaged the pin sets. depending on where you are cheap fibre optic scope that fit in your keyway can be purchased and marks will appear on the pins where logic tells you the key cannot touch. Gadgets Direct in australai sells a cheap one that will fit medium but not super small keyways, but I would inform the police, as I said Yes it is a sign of surreptitious manipulation by a skunk.
